Tunisia's ruling Islamist party Ennahda has chosen its hardline Interior Minister Ali Larayedh to take over as Prime Minister and form a new Cabinet.

The choice was made in an internal party vote late Thursday.

Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jbeli, Ennadha's secretary-general, resigned on February 19, after failing to form a technocratic government to ease tensions heightened by the assassination of opposition leader Chukri Beleid on February 6.

According to The Guardian, the appointment does not end the country's political crisis, as Larayedh will be under pressure to appoint non-party figures to key cabinet posts, including at the Interior Ministry.

His nomination is expected to make the task of finding consensus and building a coalition with Tunisia's other political parties more difficult, analysts say.
