Supporters Cheer as Outgoing Bulgarian PM Exits Parliament

Some 2000 supporters of Bulgaria's outgoing PM Boyko Borisov chanted "Victory!" and "We want Boyko!" as he exited the Parliament in downtown Sofia on Thursday.

Borisov thanked his supporters and urged them not to protests in front of the oppositional Bulgarian Socialist Party's headquarters at 20 Positano Street.

"Everyone who loves and respects me should head home, and not to Positano," he declared, referring to reports that supporters of his center-right GERB were to stage an anti-Socialist protest.

Deputy PM Tsvetan Tsvetanov also greeted the supporters, vowing that the party will win the upcoming election.

According to media sources and sources from the opposition parties, the pro-Borisov rally was not spontaneous, but rather orchestrated by the GERB party and institutions controlled by it.

Borisov said the cabinet is stepping down Wednesday morning, after protests that had gripped the country failed to abate following a major cabinet reshuffle, and even turned violent.

On Thursday, the Bulgarian Parliament accepted the resignation handed by Borisov and his Cabinet.
