Greek farmers have voiced readiness to block the Kulata-Promachonas border crossing with Bulgaria to protest against the government's austerity measures.
"On our way to Thessaloniki, we saw the tractors on the street and they were ready to block the border crossing at any moment," Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov told the Focus news agency on Friday, commenting on his Thursday meeting with Greek counterpart Athanasios Tsaftaris.
Naydenov informed that the first item on the agenda of Thursday's meeting with Tsaftaris had been the ongoing protests in Greece.
Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister emphasized that he had insisted that the government take all possible steps to prevent obstructions to trade.
He voiced hopes that if the government failed to prevent blockades, they would be staged at internal arterial roads in Greece, not the border crossing.
This is not the first case when a blockade of the Bulgarian-Greek border is used by Greek farmers as an instrument to exert pressure over their government, dnevnik.bg reminds, adding that traffic through the Kulata border crossing is occasionally blocked in January and February due to protests over unpaid subsidies, tax laws, loan terms, and unemployment.
In his interview for the Focus news agency, Naydenov further informed that the Bulgarian and Greek Ministries of Agriculture would exchange experts in a bid to boost information exchange, especially during the period of the Greek Presidency of the EU, which coincides with the beginning of the new programming period in 2014.
