Snap Elections Loom according to Bulgarian Socialist Party
Amidst escalating political turmoil in Bulgaria, the prospect of snap elections looms large, with Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Kornelia Ninova delivering scathing remarks on Tuesday
The initiative committee that initiated Bulgaria's Sunday referendum on nuclear energy has filed a voting violation claim against Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov with election authorities.
According to the committee, Tsvetanov was in breach of Bulgarian voting law by making a statement that constitutes campaign canvassing during the day of the referendum.
Bulgaria's electoral law has been traditionally banning all canvassing during election day and the day before, the so-called day of reflection.
"We witnessed many lies from our political oponents during the campaign. Lies that northwestern Bulgaria will undergo greater development, lies about a significant price drop of power," were part of Tsvetanov's words Sunday, as reported by TV7.
"But after an economic assessment, it became clear that this is a project that will cost a lot and for which Bulgarian citizens will have to pay for years on," added the Minister of Interior.
The referendum question asks Bulgarians whether they support the building of a new NPP, and was provoked by the freezing of the Belene NPP project.
The initiative committee that organized the referendum petition and has been registered as canvassing for the 'yes' answer in the campaign includes many representatives of opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party.
