The readers of Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) and Novinite.bg had the chance to selected from among fifteen nominees in an independent online vote in three categories – Politics, Business, and Diplomacy ("Ambassador of the Year") in the last weeks of December 2012 and the first weeks of January 2013.
The Personality in the News poll was held for a 12th year in a row, since the founding of Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency), now Bulgaria's largest English-language media, back in 2001. More than 5 300 readers from around the world participated in the 2012 vote.
The readers of Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) picked ABB Bulgaria Country Manager Peter Simon as Bulgaria's "Personality in the News" 2012 in "Business".
The readers of Novinite.bg selected Happy Bar & Grill Restaurants General Manager Orlin Popov as Bulgaria's "Personality in the News" 2012 in "Business".
The vote was especially contested in the third category for "Diplomacy" where our readers had to pick the most successful foreign ambassador in Bulgaria – or the "Ambassador of the Year".
The readers of Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) ultimately picked Netherlands Ambassador Karel Van Kesteren in a very close race.
The readers of Novinite.bg picked Turkey's Ambassador Ismail Aramaz in a vote that also had very close results.
The winners in the polls of Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) and Novinite.bg were announced and awarded at a special ceremony in the Sofia City Art Gallery in the Bulgarian capital on Tuesday, January 22, 2012.
The awards in "Politics" were presented by Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) and Novinite.bg editor-in-chief Ivan Dikov, the awards in "Business" were presented by Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chair Tsvetan Simeonov, and the awards for "Ambassador of the Year" were presented by Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) and Novinite.bg Publisher Maxim Behar.
Past winners in Novinite's annual "Personality in the News" polls include UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, CNN anchor Ralitsa Vassileva, ex Foreign Minister Solomon Passy, musician Teodosii Spasov. Ex EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva has won the title three times – in 2004, 2008, and 2011.
