Bulgaria's Maleeva Wins Kremlin Cup

Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria won the Kremlin cup after defeating second seed Lindsay Davenport in thriller match. She defeated Davenport 5-7 6-3 7-6 in the Kremlin Cup women's final on Sunday for her first title of the year. This is Maleeva's third Kremlin Cup title following her success back in 1994 and 1995. After losing the first set, Maleeva scored the only break in the sixth game of the second to level the match at a set apiece. The Bulgarian prevailed 7-4 in the third set tie-breaker for her third title in Moscow. Davenport had also been bidding for her first title of the season after missing much of the year with a knee injury. But the American had trouble holding her serve despite firing 15 aces in a two-hour match. The Bulgarian tennis player turned into the tournament's sensation after her victory over top seed Venus Williams (2-6 6-1 7-6) in Moscow 2nd round, Nathalie Dechy, France, 6-4, 6-2.
