Romanian ruling Social Liberal Union is set to win a two-thirds constitutional majority following Sunday's general elections.

Official results released Tuesday by Romania's election authority show that the Union gets 58.13% of votes for the Romanian Parliament's lower chamber and 60.10% for the Senate.

Thus Social Liberal Union, led by socialist PM Victor Ponta and liberal ex Senate President Crin Antonescu is going to get around 66% of seats in the two chambers.

The Union has already stated intentions to boost its majority by means of coalition with the fourth and last party that crossed the election hurdle, the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania, which got 5.15% of the vote for the lower chamber and 5.25% for the Senate.

The development is set to create even deeper political divisions in Romania between the parliament and future government on the one hand, and President Traian Basescu, on the other.

The Right Romania Alliance masterminded by Basescu came out second in the vote, but showed a very poor result, with 16.5% and 16.7% for the lower and upper chamber, respectively.

Third comes Dan Diaconescu's populist People's Party, with 13.99% and 14.65% of the vote.

The turnout was considered somewhat low at 41.7%, but is still higher than the 39.2% at the last general elections in 2008.
