At least 4 people have perished Sunday in the collapsing of one of Japan's longest tunnels, Sasogo.

Concrete slabs, each weighing 1 tonne, fell from the ceiling of the tunnel along a 110 m stretch, smashing and blocking vehicles.

Three people have been found dead in their van, and a truck driver who had called for help has also been found killed.

Authorities fear that more people might have perished or have remain trapped in the collapse, which also caused a fire in the tunnel.

The tragic incident happened some 80 km west of Tokyo, in the 4.7 km long Sasogo tunnel, one of Japan's most heavily used.

There is still no information about what might have caused the collapse.
