Bulgaria's investigation service has never failed in the so called "emblematic trials", declared Boyko Naydenov, the newly reelected head of the Bulgarian National Investigation Service.

Naydenov was reelected to chair the National Investigation Service on Thursday with 18 votes in favor out of a total of 25 members of Bulgaria's recently elected Supreme Judicial Council (VSS).

Regardless of the general mistrust of the Bulgarian public for the work of the courts, and the prosecution, the Investigation Service included, he was quick to comment that he trusted all investigators currently on staff.

Naydenov expressed hopes that the allegedly ongoing reforms in Bulgaria's National Investigation Service will produce results, and that only investigators who are not doing their job well will be removed.

The reelected head of Bulgaria's investigators also commented that it would be best if Bulgaria's new Chief Prosecutor, a position that is currently vacant after outgoing Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev was appointed to the Constitutional Court by President Rosen Plevneliev, "is an angel" but expressed doubts that "one of those can be found" to fill the spot.

"I expect the election of the new Chief Prosecutor to be extremely dramatic inasmuch as the requirements for the new choice must be a lot more serious," Naydenov said, while refusing to declare whether he might consider bidding for the job.

The head of the Bulgarian National Investigation Service backed his claim about the infallibility of the Bulgarian investigators by explaining that the recent acquittal of ex Defense Minister Nikolay Tsonev in a corruption trial was decided by lowest court and was yet to be appealed by the prosecution.

Because of its inefficiency and alleged corruption, Bulgaria's judiciary has been the subject of devastating criticism by the European Commission, including a recent threat by EU's executive that it would publish a special monitoring report over recent appointments to Bulgaria's Constitutional Court – in addition to the annual monitoring reports of Bulgaria's reforms in justice and home affairs under the so called Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM).
