As the academic year kicked off in Bulgaria's largest higher education institution on Monday, PM Boyko Borisov shared his "words of wisdom" with students.

Addressing the students of Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, Borisov emphasized that all lines of the city's subway reach the university now.

Well, this is not true, but the point is that it was Borisov who constructed the subway.

Except the subway's construction was launched way before the PM stepped in office. Anyhow, Borisov also told the students that he was building highways and that highways were vital.

A highly pragmatic speech, one has to note.

Meanwhile, Sofia University rector Ivan Ilchev told the students that they should be "anxiously free" instead of calmly obeying. And Plamen Mitev, head of the history faculty, told them "not to idolize the self-proclaimed builders of modern Bulgaria."

In the current state of affairs, it would have been much more "pragmatic" for the university to praise Borisov and declare him Honorary Academician.

In an authoritarian regime (towards which Bulgaria seems to have headed) actions like this would be not merely "pragmatic" but essential for survival.

"Anxiously un-free" would be the only option then.

One has to choose wisely.
