The number of migrants entering Bulgaria has increased by 50% over the last two months due to the conflict in Syria, according to Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

Most of the migrants trying to enter Bulgaria via its Turkish border are Syrian refugees, Tsvetanov has told the Bulgarian National Radio.

"Currently, the European Commission considers allocating funds to strengthen buffer zones like our Southern neighbor Turkey, where the migrant pressure is immense," he said.

Bulgaria's border police authorities have increased their presence at the country's border with Turkey over the influx of refugees.

Bulgaria and Turkey are set to launch joint border and customs patrols, Tsvetanov announced on Saturday after meeting with his Turkish counterpart Idris Naim Sahin.
