A wildfire in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains has been raging for six days now. Over 6,000
ha of woodland has been affected, National Fire and Emergency Safety Service (NFESS) Director Colonel Kiril Voinov said. The fire front is 400 m long. The fire is raging in a mixed
forest that is inaccessible to people and equipment. That is why the Defense Ministry has been asked to send a fire fighting helicopter. Water is being poured over the flames near the villages of Madritsa and Kostilkovo. There is a strong wind stoking the flames and hampering firefighting efforts. The firefighters are trying to contain the fire by cutting down the trees to make clearings that are 5-6 m wide. Sixteen fire engines have been working on the site of the fire. Around 500 Defence Ministry and Civil Defence troops, forest rangers and locals are battling the blaze, Voinov said. he Ivailovgrad municipality is still considered a disaster area. There is no danger for the local population, Voinov said.
