Negative Impact of Commentaries

Letters to the Editor | July 30, 2012, Monday // 08:59

Dear Milena Hristova,

I would just like to say that reporting and reiterating the problems that exist in Bulgaria is not helpful and quite damaging to any possibility that the Bulgarian people as a whole will one day begin to feel proud and pleased with their lot.

I have been a very regular visitor to Bulgaria, by choice my wife and children have moved out of the UK to Bulgaria because of major problems with social systems in the UK relating to child care and welfare.

Everyone knows that Bulgaria has it's problems (mainly because people in Bulgaria really like to broadcast it), but why not focus on some of the things that are going well for Bulgaria, why not focus on some things that Bulgaria and Bulgarians can be proud of?

Most people I meet in Bulgaria are in a state of apathy over bad things they read, just because it is reported in the news as being a big problem and that your rulers are unjust, thieving, bandits etc. etc. These people have no interest in trying to help deal with these problems, believing that it is beyond their ability or out of their reach to make a positive difference.

People need to be empowered to feel like their efforts make a difference. Why not report or document and bring to the front all the good things that Bulgarians do or have done - for the benefit of all people in Bulgaria.

For as long as the people believe they are in a bad situation - guess what? They will be. It has become a very bad habit for Bulgarians to be negative. The problems in Bulgaria are not political, not legal, not financial, but more a total lack of belief that the success of Bulgaria as a strong nation is only a dream that no-one talks about and is probably controlled by "THEM" - who ever they are.

In 10 years visiting and living in Bulgaria, I can't find much to complain about, except that people have a really fatally bad opinion of their lot, which for the most part is totally unjustified.

Bulgaria is not poor, it just believes it is. If you want to know what poverty is, go to America or the UK for a while to see some real stories.
