The full smoking ban for closed public spaces that was introduced in Bulgaria at the beginning of June has not brought about a significant decrease in the number of smokers in the country, a study shows.

A total of 34% of all adult Bulgarian smoke, according to the study conducted by the National Center for Study of Public Opinion.

"A mere 3% of all smokers surveyed have stated that they have quit smoking as a result of the ban," the study says.

79% of all Bulgarian active smokers now prefer to visit open-air or semi-open-air establishments. 41% resort to going outside for a smoke.

Some 74% of all Bulgarian smokers continue smoking as much as they did before the ban came into force.

43% of Bulgaria's smokers say they would quit the habit if it becomes too big a financial burden for them, while 37% would do it if they develop serious health problems.

Curiously, 46% of all 1000 adult Bulgarians surveyed have claimed they have never smoked.
