It is still unclear what caused the wildfire that raged for almost an entire week in Bulgaria's Vitosha Mountain near Sofia, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has stated.

"We know what it wasn't – it wasn't a lightning bolt.  It may have been an arson or a careless mistake," Tsvetanov has told reporters.

The Interior Minister said an investigation was about to take place.

The wildfire that engulfed Vitosha's Bistrishko Branishte natural reserve was extinguished on Saturday, the 7th day of the effort.

Hundreds of firemen and volunteers took part in the effort to extinguish the fire, working round-the-clock in a very difficult to access area. About 200 decares of forests and other vegetation burned out.

On Monday, Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov commented that if arsonists wanted to set a particularly inaccessible area on fire, they would have chosen precisely the Bistrishko Branishte reserve.
