Three helicopters and dozens of fire fighters have been dispatched against the wildfire in the Vitosha Mountain near the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

A Border Police helicopter was used for observation, while two other police helicopters were directly extinguishing the fire, which is close to the Sofia suburb of Bistritsa, the Interior Ministry said.

The wildfire in the Bistrishko Branishte locality started at about 2 pm on Sunday; about 10 acres of forest with fir trees were on fire on Sunday afternoon in a largely inaccessible region.

Four squads of fire fighters were dispatched on foot and on ATVs to try to reach the affected region, with Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov in command, after he was dispatched by PM Boyko Borisov; the Agriculture Ministry in Bulgaria is also in charge of the Forestry Agency.

The Sofia Fire Department has mobilized all of its off-duty officers, while the Forestry Agency has mobilized all forestry officers, Naydenov informed.
