The Czech Republic have triumphed over Greece 2:1 in the second round of Group A at the European football championship.

Two early Czech goals clinched a vital win on the stadium in Wroclaw, and left the 2004 champions needing to beat Russia to have any chance of progressing: Greece are virtually out.

Оnly two minutes and 15 seconds had passed when Petr Jiracek controlled Tomas Hubschman's neatly weighted pass with his right foot and hit it with his left.

Another two minutes and 15 seconds later, Vaclav Pilar skidded in between two defenders and finished with his knee.

Gekas, who came in for Greece as a substitute, took advantage of an error from Cech to roll the ball into an empty net in the 53rd minute.

The goal gave Greece hope that history might repeat itself and this game was transformed. What looked like being a comfortable win for the Czech Republic became a long and sometimes nervous resistance.
