Prisoners from nearby Bobov Dol detention facility have been mobilized to help clear rubble from the Pernik earthquake that shook western Bulgaria May 22.

In the wee hours that Tuesday, a 5.8 tremor shook the area of western city of Pernik, and was significantly felt in nearby capital Sofia.

The earthquake caused some damage, tearing down old houses in villages in the area, and breaking roofs and chimneys.

Each morning, a group of 10 prisoners from Bobov Dol will be driven to the Pernik area to help collect the rubble still lying around, informs Blagoevgrad Radio.

The transportation and disposal of the waste materials will be performed by the company contracted by Pernik municipalities, with prisoners only collecting the rubble.
