The Head of the Seismology Department at the National Institute in Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography, at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, BAS, Emil Botev, firmly rejects any possible connection between local and Italian earthquakes.

Speaking Tuesday, in the aftermath of the 3.8 magnitude on the Richter scale aftershock that rattled Bulgaria's Pernik region one week after the 5.9 quake, Botev, quoted by 24 Chassa (24 Hours) daily, stated that there is no theoretical or practical connection between it and the Italian tremor.

"The epicenter in Italy will obviously remain active, but it is on another frequency wave. Transmission of such waves can happen only between two neighboring seismic zones. The neighboring zone of Pernik is the zone of Sofia, and there is no tension there," the expert adamantly declares.

According to him, an earthquake such as the Tuesday one can definitely generate strong panic. He, however, reminds that scientists from BAS have already warned that such aftershocks can happen a month after the main quake.

Botev assuages people that the frequency is diminishing and the trend is for attenuation.
