Kristalina Georgieva, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, is to visit her native Bulgaria on Monday in order to inspect the condition of two villages recently jolted by an earthquake.

An earthquake that had a magnitude of about 5.8-6.0 on the Richter scale struck at 2:58 am local time last Tuesday in Southwestern Bulgaria. Its epicenter was about 6 km from the city of Pernik and some 25 km from Sofia.

On Monday, Gerogieva and Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov will visit the villages of Divotino and Meshitsa near Pernik. The two villages suffered the most severe material damages as a result of the earthquake.

Georgieva and Tsvetanov are to inspect damages and talk with local people, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry says.
