Stoyan Ganev, one of the emblematic figures of the early years of Bulgaria's post-communist transition, is going to leave the USA, and to settle back in his Bulgarian hometown of Pazardzhik, a report says.

Ganev is known as Bulgaria's Deputy PM and Foreign Minister in the 1991-1992 government of PM Filip Dimitrov. He is famous for a controversial purge of Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry after the collapse of the communist regime in 1989. In 1992, he chaired the 47th session of the UN General Assembly.

In the 1990s, he worked and lived in the USA, including as a professor at Bridgeport University and New York University.

Ganev came back to Bulgaria briefly in 2001, when he was in charge of the political cabinet of ex Tsar Simeon Saxe-Coburg, who won the 2001 general elections and served as Bulgaria's PM in 2001-2005.

According to a report of the 24 Chasa daily, Ganev has now decided to return from the USA permanently, and to settle back in his hometown of Pazardzhik in Southern Bulgaria in order to take care of his elderly mother.

The paper cites as a source Hari Haralampiev, a Bulgarian attorney who is a close of friend of Ganev's, who also reveals that the former Foreign Minister of Bulgaria and law professor has expressed a desire to join the local bar association in Pazardzhik.

According to the report, Ganev is expected to arrive back in Bulgaria in early May 2012.
