Bulgaria: Bulgarian Ex Energy Minister: Common Sense Prevailed on Belene NPP Traicho Traikov, former Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, has praised the decision of the center-right GERB government to quit the Belene NPP project. Photo by BGNES

Traicho Traikov, former Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, has sided with the reactions of approval for the government's decision to quit Belene NPP project.

"Common sense has prevailed, now we need to see the details," Traikov told journalists of news portal dnevnik.bg.

"I have been insisting on this decision for over a year," the former Energy Minister pointed out.

He specified that the decision to transfer the Russian reactor to the Kozloduy NPP meant that the engineering design, the management and control systems and the turbine of the reactor had to be updated.

"The problem with natural gas power plants is that the price of the electricity generated by them is uncompetitive," Traikov noted.

He explained that if Bulgaria implemented a project for a gas power plant at the current prices at which it buys gas from Gazprom, the price of electricity generated by the facility would exceed BGN 130 per mWh.

"This is why all companies that have so far shown an interest in such a project have sought long-term contracts with national power utility NEK, which we have not allowed," Traikov concluded.
