Bulgarian Ambassador in Washington DC, Elena Poptodorova, says that the subject of shale gas exploration in the country must be examined more calmly.

Speaking for the Bulgarian State TV BNT, the Ambassador stressed that the government must work on securing even larger US investments in Bulgaria, which would greatly contribute to the country's advancement.

Poptodorova advised to seek the opinion of other countries where US energy giant Chevron does exploration and extraction works. She was adamant that Bulgaria must at least learn if it has shale gas deposits.

As another advice, she stated that the country must seek large US energy companies and rejected fears the US can pressure Bulgaria, saying this was not at all the American mentality.

In January, following a wave of environmental protests, the Bulgarian government revoked a shale gas exploration permit granted to Chevron for deposits in Northeastern Bulgaria, citing the insufficient proof of the environmental safety of hydraulic fracturing. The decision followed a wave of protests organized by environmentalists and citizens across the country.

On January 18, the Cabinet imposed an indefinite ban on hydraulic fracturing, a method which involves injecting a mix of water, sand and chemicals at very high pressure deep underground to crack rock and release oil and gas.
