Switzerland Joins U.N.

Switzerland takes a step into the international limelight Tuesday, becoming the 190th member of the United Nations. Even though Geneva is home to the organization's second biggest headquarters outside New York, up until now the Swiss had steered well clear of signing up for membership. But that changed back in March, when, despite a vigorous campaign by the "no" lobby, 55 percent of voters approved joining the world body, deciding that the time had come for the picturesque Alpine nation, that is renowned for its luxury chocolates and expensive watches, to foster greater foreign ties.
