Sofia's NATO Bid Tops Agenda of President in Iceland, U.S.

Bulgarian President Parvanov left for the United States early in the morning of September 9. The president's program start with a working visit in Iceland. Bulgaria's NATO bid and ways of boosting bilateral relations will top the agenda of his official meeting with Iceland's President Olafur Grimsson. Bulgaria's NATO bid will be a highlight on the program of Bulgaria's President Parvanov in the United States as well. Bulgaria hopes to get invitation for membership in the Alliance at the Prague summit. President Georgi Parvanov will visit Washington for meetings with Vice President Richard B. Cheney, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and other officials. Parvanov will be in Washington Sept. 9-10 before traveling to New York the next day. Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov will chair the September 11th session of the UN Security Council. Bulgaria took over the UN Security Council presidency on September 1. The Council will open with a special session to commemorate the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
