INDUSTRIAL SALES INCREASE 4 PER CENT IN 2001

Sofia - Industrial sales in the first six months of 2001 increased 4 per cent from a year earlier, the National Statistical Institute said.

The sales volume in the processing industry went up 3.9 per cent, and in the supply of electricity, central heating, gas fuel and water 7.8 per cent. A 7.2-per-cent decline was reported in the extraction industry.

The sales of radio, television and telecommunications equipment grew 28.5 per cent, of clothing 20.6 per cent, and of footwear 16.5 per cent.

A decline was observed in the sales of Bulgarian-made office and electronic equipment (46.6 per cent), in printing and publishing (22.5 per cent), in coal and peat extraction (12.7 per cent), and in metal ores extraction (7.5 per cent).

Monthly sales in the first half of 2001 were generally higher than a year earlier, except for June, when the sales volume was 0.8 per cent lower than in June 2000. In June 2001 there was a decline in the processing industry (2.1 per cent) and in the extraction industry (1.2 per cent) year on year. The monthly supply of electricity, central heating, gas fuel and water grew 8.2 per cent.
