Brussels highly appreciates Bulgaria's position on the controversial International Criminal Court, Euro-integration Minister Meglena Kuneva said. EU-enlargement commissioner Verheugen said that during a meeting with Kuneva on Friday. Bulgaria's reaction was said to be very "sensible" and just what is expected from a country that will soon be a part of the EU, Kuneva quoted Verheugen as saying. Bulgaria is currently conducting consultations with the European Commission and is in constant dialogue with the United States on the issue. The European Commission called on the EU aspirants not to follow the example of Romania that signed the agreement with the United States. The Euro-integration minister underlined she wasn't disappointed from the meeting in Elsinore where the foreign ministers of the EU member states said an exact date for Bulgaria's EU accession might not be named in Copenhagen. This was an informal meeting and such decision should be expected only at the Copenhagen summit, Kuneva pointed out. Verheugen assured her that "EU door is open" for Bulgaria and that the country's efforts will be assessed individually. In its EU bid, Bulgaria is often coupled with Romania and both countries are a step behind the ten countries that will join the union in 2006.
