Cold weather and heavy snow are believed to have caused the death of two men in a mountainous region near the town of Smolyan, Southern Bulgaria.

Both died in the harsh winter night between Friday and Saturday, when a number of settlements in the Rhodope Mountains were hit by severe cold.

One of the men was found near Chepelare lift station "Mechi Chal" and the other - on the road in Rudozem village of Vitina. The victims were aged 55 and 75.

Bulgaria was thrown into chaos on Saturday as heavy snow and torrential rains cut off electricity, stranded people, cars, buses and trucks.

Weather forecasts say the snow will continue to fall across the country, while the mercury will not rise above freezing point.
