Bulgaria Mins: Govt Officials, Truck Drivers to Blame for Road Blocks

Society | January 8, 2012, Sunday // 12:30

Bulgarian Minister of Regional Development Lilyana Pavlova has fired the two senior managers of the state Highways Agency for failing to cope with snowfall over the weekend.

Heavy snow Saturday has caused many of Bulgaria's roads to be blocked, with the major Hemus Highway suffering a dramatic clogging.

Sunday an emergency meeting was called by Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov to deal with the situation.

Regional Minister Pavlova announced that the directors of the Highways Agency have failed to fulfil their duties to keep roads clean and have been dismissed from their positions.

She also said that a new statute of internal rules has been implemented in the Agency to ensure clearer personal responsibility.

In addition, Interior Minister Tsvetanov argued that many of the road blocks have been caused by truck drivers who did not observe police instructions and were driving with summer tires and no chains in heavy snow.
