In June, the workforce in Bulgaria totalled 3,412,600 persons (50.4% of the population aged 15 or older). Unemployed persons totalled 661,100 (19.4% of the workforce), the National Statistical Institute (NSI) announced. In June the NSI conducted a survey on the workforce. The number of persons employed in various economic sectors increased from 2,641,300 in March to 2,751,500 in June. The proportion of employed persons to the population aged 15 or older stood at 40.6% in June, up 1.6 percentage points from March. Employment increased both in urban and in rural areas. In urban areas the proportion of employed persons remained higher. Some 43.9% of men and 37.6% of women aged 15 or older had jobs in June. Wage earners totalled 2,318,700 (84.3% of all employed persons). The number and proportion of wage earners in the private sector increased further, to reach 52.5% of all wage earners in June. There were 99,300 employers (3.6% of employed persons) and 274,300 self-employed persons (10% of the employed). Unemployment was lower in June than in March, which is normal for the season, the NSI said. The unemployment rate among men was higher than among women: 20.2% of the male and 18.4% of the female workforce, respectively. Some 67,800 unemployed persons have university education, 350,700 have secondary education, and 242,600 have lower-than-secondary education. Nearly 62.1% of the unemployed in June had been jobless for one year or longer.
