The massive wildfire that erupted on Monday in Bulgaria's Central Balkan National Park has now spread over a territory of approximately 550-600 decares, the country's Environment Ministry has informed.

Some 30 employees of the national park were engaged in the extinguishing operation on Tuesday. Due to the strong wind in the region, the fire has spread rapidly and has reached the Steneto biosphere reserve.

According to local experts, the raging wildfire has most probably been the result of arson.

The Central Balkan National Park is located in the central and higher portions of the Balkan Range. The Park contains rare and endangered wildlife species and communities, self-regulating ecosystems of biological diversity, as well as historical sites of global cultural and scientific significance.

Just several days ago, another massive wildfire in Bulgaria's Pirin Mountain was successfully extinguished.
