WHO CONVENTION ON TOBACCO CONTROL ADOPTED

Eight countries from Southeaster Europe, including Bulgaria, adopted almost fully the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). This was announced by Deputy Health Minister Slavcho Bogoev after the end of the two-day consultative working meeting between the Southeastern countries and the WHO European bureau on ways of tobacco control and tobacco-related problems. A total of 161 WHO member-countries took part in the preparations and negotiations of the document. The recommendations voiced at the Sofia meeting are expected to be adopted at WHO Fifth session in Geneva in October 14-25. Among the obligations under the convention are a draft of a national strategy on tobacco control and combat and limited advertisement and sponsorship for tobacco producers. The amount of tar and nicotine in Bulgarian-produced tobacco is twice the European standards. The obligations under the Conventions should be fulfilled in a eight-year period.
