Fifty-one Bulgarian intellectuals signed a declaration backing President Peter Stoyanov`s bid for a second term in office. Stoyanov, who was nominated presidential candidate by the Union of Democratic Forces in 1996, will run for a second term in office this autumn as independent. He is supported by the UDF. `The declaration was signed by 51 prominent singers, composers, actors, directors, writers, and others`, film director Krikor Azaryan announced at a press conference, adding that these include opera singers Alexandrina Pendanchanska and Nikolai Gyuzelev, poetess Blaga Dimitrova, writer Vera Moutafchieva, musician Teodossiy Spassov and folk singer Valya Balkanska, to mention but a few. According to Azaryan, the intellectuals expressed their personal support before the political forces have named their presidential candidates so as to avoid the possibility of politicising their support. They believe that the head of state has proven that he is a president of all Bulgarians and has presented Bulgaria well before the world. In their opinion, Stoyanov preserved the stabilizing and balancing role of the presidency even in times of hardships.
