In a sharply critical speech just before the start of the political season, President Parvanov said that people's trust in the state institutions and the authorities was "melting." "We cannot afford to simulate stability," he said aiming his criticism at the incumbents' reaction to the criminal incidents some three weeks ago. A package of legislative amendments will be propounded by the new council for coordination of the combat with crime, the president announced. The newly established body has proved necessary after the obvious lack of coordination between the law-enforcement institutions and the harsh disputes of the political parties, the president pointed out. He denounced the ruling party Simeon II National Movement (SIINM) for acting "jealous" and not taking seriously the new anti-crime council with the president. Sharp rebukes also went to the plunging quality of life rates and the fiscal policy of SIINM that contradict the party's pre-election pledges. The president recommended a common position of all parties and institutions on the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant in the negotiations with the European Commission. According to him, better conditions for Bulgarian farmers are also what the government should be aiming at in the EU pre-accession talks.
