In an experiment seeming to defy the laws of nature, scientists in Switzerland's CERN have allegedly found out that tiny particles could travel faster than the speed of light.

Neutrinos sent 730 kilometers (453.6 miles) underground between laboratories in Switzerland and Italy arrived a fraction of a second sooner than they should have, according to the speed of light, according to the physicists who carried out the experiment.

"After many months of studies and cross checks, we have not found any instrumental effect that could explain the result of the measurement," Antonio Ereditato at the University of Bern, Switzerland, said in a statement, as cited by CNN.

"It is very, very remarkable if it's true," Professor Neville Harnew, head of particle physics at Oxford University, has commented.

If confirmed, the scientists' work would prove that the basis of Albert Einstein's famous 1905 equation for the theory of relativity - E=mc2 - is wrong. According to Einstein's theory, there is nothing that can travel faster than the speed of light.

However, CERN's results  has been met with skepticism among other physicists around the world, while even the Switzerland-based scientists themselves say they are not ready to proclaim a discovery, Radio Free Europe points out.
