The Bulgarian Kayak Society has held its third annual national meeting, which was dedicated to the successful campaign to prevent a hydro-power plant project that would have affected the major Bulgarian whitewater kayaking spot – the Struma River.
The third annual event of the Bulgarian Kayak Society - taking place September 4-6 along the Struma River in the Kresna Gorge in Southwestern Bulgaria - was entitled "Let There Be Struma".
The motto of the event – "Let There Be Struma" - focused attention on the success of the Bulgarian Kayak Society which managed – in cooperation with rafting and environmental organization – to stop the project for a 4th hydro-power plant in the Kresna Gorge.
Several competitions were organized as part of the event, for which the Bulgarian Kayak Society cooperated with the Bulgarian Canoe Federation to emphasize and promote the sports and tourism opportunities that whitewater kayaking has to offer in Bulgaria, and to exact adequate protection and development measures on part of the state institutions.
Over 60 whitewater kayaking enthusiasts participated in the races, with many more people attending as viewers.
The races took place along the slalom course prepared by the Bulgarian Kayak Society, and funded by its own members.
