The forces of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi have abandoned the front line near Brega, and are retreating west towards Sirte, according to the Benghazi-based rebels.

Brega is fully in the heads of the rebels, which Gaddafi's forces have fled west, a spokesperson of the Libyan Transitional National Council, i.e. the rebel government, said, as quoted by BGNES, as just the rebels as fighting to gain full control of the Libyan capital.

Brega, which is 240 km southwest of the rebels' capital Benghazi, has been captured numerous times by both the loyalists and the rebels in the course of the six-month civil war. It is located on the coastline road from Benghazi to Tripoli.

Backed by NATO air force, at the end of July the rebels moved against Brega, and managed to push out the Gaddafi forces. Sirte, which is Gaddafi's birthplace, still remains a bastion of his regime.
