Norway Attacker Admits Responsibility amidst Character Revelations
Anders Behring Breivik, 32, the prime suspect in the Friday double terrorist attack in Norway, has admitted full responsibility.
Breivik described his actions as "gruesome but necessary" and said he would explain himself at a court hearing on Monday, BBC reports.
At least 85 people died when the gunman ran amok on Utoeya Island Friday, hours after a bomb in Oslo killed seven.
The search for the missing continues. In Oslo police said the death toll could rise further as bodies or body parts were in buildings damaged by the bomb but still too unstable to search. In addition, four people from the island camp shooting are yet to be found amidst fears some may have drowned after jumping into the lake to escape the bullets.
The news about Breivik accepting responsibility comes on the backdrop of new information about his personality. BBC reports that still pictures of him, wearing a wetsuit and carrying an automatic weapon, appeared in a 12-minute anti-Muslim video called Knights Templar 2083, which appeared briefly on YouTube.
The video is a compilation of hatred-filled declarations against Islam, described as the ideology of the genocide, Marxism, and the multicultural model of society alternating with admiration and reverence for the Knights. The police in Oslo have not yet commented on the video, but media in Norway write the video is authored by Breivik.
A 1 500-page document written in English is also said to be by Breivik's. It was posted under the pseudonym of Andrew Berwick and put online hours before the attacks, suggesting they had been years in the planning, at least since the fall of 2009.
The document is titled A European Declaration of Independence 2083 and presents a plan for the liberation of the old continent of Marxism, Islam and Multiculturalism, seen by the author as the brain child of Communism. Europe letting followers of Marxism roam free after World War II as the biggest mistake, according to him.
In the manifest, which is in the form of an interview with himself, Breivik explains he had changed his views after the NATO attacks on Serbia in 1999, describing them as unacceptable and calling the Serbs brothers, who wanted to restrict the spread of the Islam.
The document describes terrorism as a tool for the awakening of the masses. Breivik says there he expects that 95% of people in Europe will condemn his attacks and will label him the greatest monster since World War II.
In it, the author talks about historical events, but also describes himself and his views, practicing target shooting or making a bomb.
A detailed diary of the last three months before the attack is attached. The last entry is July 22 at 12:51 pm, three hours before the events that shook the world occured.
"I believe this will be my last entry. It is now Fri, July 22nd, 12:51. Sincere regards, Andrew Berwick, Justiciar Night Commander, Knights Templar Europe, Knights Templar, Norway," the entry reads.
From the writings, Bervick appears to be well-educated and with various interests. He also insists he is Protestant, but often criticizes his own church.
His colleagues from the time he worked at a call center describe him as a much disciplined employee and as a person never saying anything bad about others, adding they were in shock after learning he has been the perpetrator of the mass killings.
Neighbors say the man had always been in good disposition and took great care of his mother, but at the same time he had been a member of a Swedish neo-Nazi forum, where he registered in 2009 under an alias. The forum discusses the supremacy of the white race and violent strategies for destroying democracy.
Meanwhile, a European-based anti-Islam organization reports Breivik wanted to join its Facebook group, but was rejected over suspicions he has neo-Nazi ties, which arose after the group's moderators checked the man's own Facebook profile.
The Russian news agency ITAR-TASS reports that the manifest had been sent to several right-wing politicians in Finland.
