The Bulgarian regions of Vidin and Blagoevgrad are under code orange Sunday, the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) declared.

The mercury in these regions is expected to hit the 39 degrees Celsius mark. The rest of the country is under code yellow with temperatures between 34 and 37 degrees and 31-33 on the Black Sea coast.

Doctors advise everyone to not venture outside between 12 pm and 4 pm, and if they want to take a walk – to do so in shady parks and gardens. Plenty of liquids are to be drunk, but sugary and sparkling beverages, and alcohol must be avoided. The water should not be icy cold.

People should consume more fresh vegetables and fruit, avoid fats and sweets, and eat in moderate amounts, especially at dinner time. Clothes to wear must be of light color, with long sleeves and legs, from natural material and loose-fitting. Hats, sunglasses with high UV protection and sunblock are a must.

Code orange means intense weather situations with potential damage, injuries and casualties and is declared for temperatures between 38 and 41 degrees in cases of dangerous heat. Code yellow also means potentially dangerous weather.
