An earless rabbit has been born near the crippled Japanese Fukushima nuclear power plant, according to media reports.
The animal was born on May 7, according to its owner, Yuko Sugimoto, in the town of Namie, which is situated just outside the exclusion zone announced after the March 11 disaster.
"I have been raising rabbits for more than 10 years and this is the first time something like this has happened," Sugimoto told the weekly magazine Flash.
The rabbit also shows traits of albinism, as it is coated purely white with red eyes. This may be the result of mutations in several genes.
Even though the mutations may not be caused by the recent nuclear event, the earless rabbit has sparked fears about possible hazardous radiation consequences among humans.
