Are We Seeing the Death Throes of GERB?

Letters to the Editor | June 8, 2011, Wednesday // 14:48

The events over the last couple of weeks have confirmed how far Borisov will go to stay in power, even if it compromises his principles and tarnishes his imagine worldwide (which he is so keen to protect). It also yet again makes a mockery of the Bulgarian political system and those who manipulate it.

There's a saying that goes like this - "if you sleep with dogs you get fleas". I think Boyko Borisov must be scratching a lot right now!

Everyone knows that the Bulgarians are xenophobic and need very little to ignite the Ottoman / Muslim detestation that exists in the country, so it should be stopped prior to it becomes a bigger problem.

Now the political situation is changing very fast with the main coalition partners in the previous government, having made their move at the right time and when the cosy alliances are starting to show the strains. A vote of no confidence will soon be tabled against the government.

Borisov has been walking a tightrope ever since he came to power in 2009 but because he now thinks he is invincible, has ignored the obvious pitfalls and traps that await him. When you are relying on an un-stable partner like Ataka anything can happen (as we have seen), so you are vulnerable and your ability to govern is limited. I must say that since the fracas at the Mosque Ataka have gone very quite; so maybe Borisov has explained the seriousness to both parties if they now fall out.

There is no doubt that compared to the previous governments; the GERB government under Borisov has been an enormous failure and has done very little to improve the Bulgarians standard of living or encourage the younger ones to stay. Building small highways means nothing to people when they can hardy pay for their food, rent, and energy bills each month.

These are the things that the government should be focusing on, not " headline grabbers" It's well known that Borisov wants to go down in history as the man who build the highways, which brought back all the millions of Bulgarians who have left since 1989.

The recent Wikileaks cables are self –explanatory about Borisov and only confirm what everyone thought... he's no different from the rest, self-first - self-last. One of the things that Borisov will be remembered for are the sayings and gaffеs he made, during his time as Prime Minister... here's one of the most memorable ones.

Borisov was exalting the wonderful and special relationship that the Bulgarians had with the Arab world, especially regarding inward investment by them with a - " Doner Kebab" on every corner in Sofia!!
