Borisov Scores Another Own Goal
One wonders how many more times the EU and a number of its members have to go through the same rhetoric with the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov about what is expected of Bulgaria in order to join Schengen zone? The answer is very clear- clean up your judiciary; reduce corruption and crime so that it does not make it easier for the contagion to i nfiltrate the rest of the EU via open borders.
The issue with joining the Schengen zone has become an obsession with Borisov, like so many other things. He does not see the big picture but makes a fool of himself and what is worse of Bulgaria too. Everyone in the EU must be fed up with his persistent harassment and only last week the Hungarian Prime Minister said the whole Schengen issue has been a big strain on his country's six-month presidency. The Hungarians had experienced first hand Borisov charm offensive, along with Bulgarian diplomacy from the ex fireman.
The two mistakes that Borisov is frequently making are very elementary. Firstly he uses the "bull in a china shop" approach and never listens or takes advice from anyone, just believes he is always right and continues on his chosen path. To make things worse he then tells everyone that the other EU members have told him something entirely the opposite from what has really happened. He works on the philosophy "if you tell a lie often enough it becomes the truth". Also, he does not seem to comprehend that France and Germany are not going to be bullied by an irrelevant Prime Minister from Eastern Europe into anything. These are two of the founding members of the EU and carry a lot of power and weight within it. Don't forget most people in Western Europe only know Bulgaria from their holidays on the Black Sea and nothing else!
The country that has come out of this entire shambles with dignity and respect is Romania, the other half of the Schengen equation. They must just be sitting there watching Bulgarians keep shooting themselves in the foot.
Every day Bulgaria and its citizens are being made to look like idiots in Europe by their politicians.... When is this going to stop??
