Oncology clinic in Sofia burnt down on Wednesday afternoon. The fire signal was given at 12,42 p.m. by the librarian of the Specialized Oncology Intensive Care Ward. The reason was the short circuit in an outdated switchboard in one of the labs on the top floor. There were no patients there, because of the repairs underway from last March. Reportedly, there were 20 people from the hospital staff there. Half of them managed to escape by the staircase. The rest gathered in one of the rooms on the burning floor. They began suffocating. A woman rushed to the outside cornice of the building and wanted to jump. She was taken down thanks to a fire ladder. All were rescued from the burning room. A lightly gas-poisoned laboratory assistant and two firemen were taken to the `Pirogov` Emergency Aid Hospital. Ten patients from the lower floors of the hospital were evacuated. Two hours later two-meter flames and thick puffs of smoke could still be seen. The fire was extinguished by 3.30 p.m. The residential area smelt of chlorine. The fire destroyed 300 sq meters of roof.
