Bulgaria: Italy's Most Mystic Sculptor Comes to Enchant Bulgaria Anna Amendolagine, the director of the Italian Culture Institute in Sofia, at the first exhibition in Sofia of renowned Italian sculptor Valerio Capoccia.

Bulgarian art lovers have for the first time the chance to experience the purity and tranquillity of the art of Valerio Capoccia, one of the most successful contemporary Italian sculptors.

The renowned Bulgarian sculptor, Velichko Minekov, who is also the author of the statue of the prominent writer Ivan Vazov in Rome, introduced Capoccia's artistry to the Bulgarian audience at the opening of his first exhibition in Sofia at the end of last week:

"His clear-cut shapes are quite impressive," noted Prof. Minekov. "Bulgarian connoisseurs and art lovers now have a chance to experience Capoccia's aesthetic mysticism".

The exhibits can be viewed at the gallery of hotel Anel till April 30.

He was only five years old when he first grabbed the chisel and carved out a trough for the hens of a 'granny' that lived nearby his house. It was at this early age that Valerio Capoccia discovered his talent for sculpting. But it took him more than twenty years to pursue his vocation as he was born into a poor peasant family, believing that his parents' expectations were more important than the cravings of his soul.

So he earned a degree in economics, married, had children. His life was peaceful, settled and successful, yet not quite happy as he felt the constant urge to dusty off his chisel and get back to his sculpting. When he finally did it it was with the determination to not let go of his dreams so easily.

Today Valerio Capoccia is one of the most successful contemporary Italian sculptors – his works are owned by private collectors in Italy, USA, Australia, Belgium. Critics define him as an 'elegant mystic' whose sculptures unite the enigmatic images of the past to our present-day understanding of the world and immerse you into a world of purity and tranquillity.

Novinite.com managed to catch up with Valerio Capoccia shortly before his departure for Rome and asked him about the twists and turns of his life and the bends and curves of his sculpting.
