Is Bulgaria Heading for Autocratic State under Boyko Borisov?

Letters to the Editor | April 3, 2011, Sunday // 16:23

More and more we are hearing the same rhetoric from the Bulgarian Prime Minster Boyko Borisov, regarding everything relating to Bulgaria and it begins with ....I did this and I will not do that, as long as I'm in charge. The word We appears to be absent from his vocabulary!

It seems that nothing can happen without it being rubber stamped by Borisov, whose influence and pressurised methods seem unrelenting, particularly with his fellow GERB ministers and MPs. I thought that the government ought to be a process where everybody in the cabinet contributes and decisions are made collectively, not by one individual alone, unless it's an autocracy!

Also, absolute power corrupts and leads to megalomania (a psycho-pathological condition characterised by delusional fantasies of wealth, power, or omnipotence) and has been the downfall of many people with inflated egos in history. Alexander The Great was one of them!

Every day new information is released informing the citizens of Bulgaria, what they can expect if they get in the way or threaten the security of the Prime Minster and how parnoid he is about it.. Have your tyres shot at (but this action does not mean you are in any danger or will crash), says the head of security. Is this the Wild West? Also, if you don't make a decision at the traffic lights within three seconds to go or stop and the Borisov motorcade is going through a red light, the government will sue you for dangerous driving if there's an accident, even though it's not your fault. Some of the other declarations from the Borisov goverment are in the realms of fantasy and must cause lots of entertainment and anxiety in Brussels.

Where is the man of the people who has seen at first hand, what an autocracy can do to a country and its citizens ? Why now does he never spend time or listen to them, when they had so much faith in his policies before he was elected ? Time and time again a new leader takes charge of running a country and turns out worse that the person they have replaced.

Borisov is certainly heading that way.... A change of direction is desperately needed!
