HALF OF BULGARIA’S POPULATION IS ECONOMICALLY ACTIVE

3,399,700 people, or 50,3 percent of the total number of the Bulgarians are economically active, data from a survey of the National Statistical Institute show. The economic activity coefficient is with 1,8 points higher compared to March and almost the same as in June 2001.

From the total number of the economically active people, 2,800,500 are permanently employed and 599,2000 are unemployed. From all employed, 52,5 percent are male. 7,1 points more men are employed than women. Those who work in towns are 2,110,400, while in villages – 690,100. The employment coefficients are respectively 45,3 percent and 32,8 percent.

In June, 1,019,600 people and 36,4% from the total number of employed worked in the public sector while in the private – 1,767,400 or 63,1 percent. In the private sector, 1,344,500 are hired while the rest are independently employed (including employers and family employees).

The number of the unemployed in June are 42,500 less than in March, which is normal considering the higher seasonal employment. From the total number of the unemployed 328,700 are men and 270,400 are women.
