Two Iranian warships have entered the Suez Canal en route for the Mediterranean Sea, canal officials have informed.
The two ships — the frigate Alvand and the supply ship Kharq — entered the canal early morning and were expected to reach the Mediterranean later in the day, the officials have said before Jerusalem Post.
Alvand is armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, and the Kharg, a supply vessel capable of carrying three helicopters and manned by 250 personnel, the Los Angeles Times has reported.
This is the first time in 30 years Iran's military ships have traveled the strategic waterway. The two ships are expected to dock at the Syrian port of Latkia.
