Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, has pledged additional financing in the amount of BGN 10 M for the "10 Miracles of Bulgaria," including sites from the country's historical and cultural heritage.
The Minister made the announcement during the discussion dedicated to the national "Miracles of Bulgaria" campaign, held under the patronage of the Bulgarian daily "Standart." The discussion was also attended by Culture Minister, Vezhdi Rashidov, Economy Minister, Traicho Traikov, the Minister of EU Funds, Tomislav Donchev and the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova.
The campaign aims at preserving and highlighting Bulgaria's cultural and historical heritage. The BGN 10 M will be spent on the top 10 "miracles," recently selected by an online vote, organized by "Standart."
The top 10 will also be included in the videoclip, advertising Bulgaria at leading international tourist exchanges and exhibits, Traikov announced while Donchev made the commitment to secure EU technical assistance under the EU funding programs.
Deputy Regional Minister, Ekaterina Zaharieva, informed her institution is going to provide clarifications on the ownership on all 10 sites in the next three months. The Member of the European Parliament, Slavi Binev, promised to present the campaign to his MEP colleagues within six months.
A number of Bulgarian experts, historians, archeologists, and journalists have also made a commitment to the campaign by becoming members of the Public Council and giving their opinion on the future of the sites.
Number one in the top "10 Miracles of Bulgaria" had been bestowed to the ancient Black Sea town of Sozopol and the adjacent islands – St. Ivan and St. Kirik. The others (from 2 to 10) are: the ancient Thracian sanctuary Perperikon, old town Nessebar, the Thracian sanctuary Tatul, the Belogradchik Rocks and Fortress, the Madara Rider and the Shumen Fortress, the Roman city of Deultum near the town of Debelt, the architectural and cultural medieval sanctuary "Tsarevets" and "Trapezitsa" in the old capital Veliko Tarnovo, and the architectural sanctuary of "Veliki Preslav" (Great Preslav – also an old Bulgarian capital.)
