BULGARIA DEFEATS ALGERIA 81-67 AT BASKETBALL IN ISTANBUL

Bulgaria toppled Algeria 81-67 at the Efes Pilsen Istanbul World Cup basketball tournament. Bulgaria led Algeria 48 to 30 at halftime_ a lead it continued to hold by game's end. Top scorer was Boiko Mladenov of Bulgaria who scored 16 points. A day earlier Canada toppled Bulgaria 97-72. Canada maintained a large lead throughout its game to defeat Bulgaria by 25 points. The game's top scorer was Michael Alexander Meeks, who grabbed 21 points for Canada. Eight national teams are competing in this first-ever tournament, which will continue in Istanbul's Abdi Ipekci stadium through August 4. The tournament is said to be a crucial test before the World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, from Aug. 28 to Sept. 9.
