Thin snow of up to 5 cm will cover the bigger part of the country, according to weather forecasts by Bulgarian meteorologists.

Snowfall coming from southwest began Sunday night. On Monday, the weather will remain cloudy. There will be rain and snow fall in the south regions of the country.

Low temperatures will range between -5 and 0 degrees Centigrade, while the highs will be between 0 and 5 degrees.

The weather on the Black Sea coast will be cloudy, with rain and snow falls in the afternoon. Moderate winds will blow from south-southeast. Maximum temperatures will be between 3 and 7 degrees.

Snow will also fall in the mountains. The maximum temperature at 1,200 meters will be -2 degrees, and at 2,000 meters will be -7 degrees.

On Monday night, precipitations will decrease and temperatures will drop.

The Sofia Municipality has announced that the companies, responsible for the snow cleaning, have already spilled mixtures against ice on all steep and dangerous areas and bridges in the Bulgarian capital.

The public transport in Sofia was also on schedule at 6:45 am Monday.

The roads in the country are passable in winter conditions. The road pavements near Sofia and Pernik are snowy and icy because of the snowfall, but they are being cleaned.

The passes Zlataritza-Etropole and Tvarditza-Elena are closed. The Dyulino Pass is closed for trucks only, while the Varbitsa Pass will remain close for the whole winter season.

Snow also covered Turkey on Saturday and the bad weather affected the sea transport on the Bosphorus, the Marmara Sea and the Dardanelles.

The intense snowfall battered the capital city of Ankara over the weekend, with 106 accidents. Many roads were closed to traffic, including the busiest routes.

The winter also came late in Greece and the temperatures in Athens were about 22 degrees until Thursday afternoon last week.

Hours later, they dropped below freezing in the suburbs causing a serious snow cover throughout the country. The strong winds led authorities to ban almost all passenger ship service over the weekend.
